High Schoolers Trade Textbooks for Tails: Canine Careers Program Launched

In an innovative approach to vocational education, students from Inverell and Macintyre High Schools recently swapped their classrooms for the Delungra Showground. The initiative provided a unique, hands-on learning experience focused on the world of working dogs, offering insights into canine welfare, training, and potential career pathways within the animal industry.

Key Takeaways

  • Students gained practical knowledge in dog training, welfare, and handling.
  • The program connected students with industry professionals, opening doors for work experience and future careers.
  • It highlighted the importance of understanding animal behaviour and responsible pet ownership.

A Day with Working Dogs

Twenty-two students participated in the Working Dogs Program, which delved into various aspects of canine care and training. The curriculum covered essential topics such as feeding, watering, health, and the specific techniques involved in training dogs to work with sheep. This immersive experience aimed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of what it takes to work with and care for working dogs.

Industry Connections and Future Pathways

Organised by the Regional Industry Education Partnerships, the program was designed to bridge the gap between education and industry. Matt Ehsman, an experienced working dog trainer and Inverell Show Dog Trial organiser, led sessions introducing students to different breeds like kelpies, border collies, and German shepherds. The event also featured professionals including veterinarians, stock truck drivers, and breeders, who shared their expertise and discussed career opportunities. This initiative is particularly beneficial for students considering further studies in agriculture and primary industries, TAFE courses, or apprenticeships.

Student Perspectives

Students found the program highly valuable. Mia Kitzelmann, a Year 11 student from Macintyre High, emphasised the importance of understanding animal behaviour, noting, "There is a lot more to working a dog and the sheep industry." Dempsey Kahler, a Year 9 student from Inverell High, shared a key learning: "I learnt that if you stress over the dog doing the wrong thing, then the dog will react accordingly, causing everyone to stress."

Program Origins and Impact

Melissa Willcocks, a primary industries teacher at Inverell High, praised the program as a "great initiative" for providing practical experience. The two-day course was initially conceived by careers adviser Deb Snaith during COVID-19 lockdowns, inspired by a surge in demand for pets and a need for owner education. A representative from Inverell Shire Council also contributed by discussing responsible pet ownership, further enriching the students' learning experience.
