Our Pre-Puppy Program

Getting a puppy is a big commitment and anybody that tells you otherwise is lying to you. Having and owning a dog is one of the most rewarding experiences you will ever have, but it does require time and effort.

Our pre-puppy program has 2 key areas of focus:

  • Decide if puppy ownership is right for you, understand costs, lifestyle fit, and readiness
  • For those that decide it is right for them, everything you need to know about different breeds, common myths and first day preparations

Module 1

Deciding If You Are Ready

  • Costs of owning a dog (food, vet, insurance, training)
  • Time & commitment required
  • Space & environment suitability (house / apartment / yard)
  • Lifestyle changes (travel, social, work)
  • Pros & cons of getting a dog vs waiting or choosing alternative options (rescue, foster, etc.)

Module 2

Choosing The Right Dog/Breed

  • Breed types / breed groups
  • Size, energy level, grooming, temperament
  • Health issues common to certain breeds
  • Mixed breed vs purebred
  • Where to source (breeders, shelters, rescue) — what to look for, red flags

Module 3

Preparing The Home & Family

  • Puppy-proofing house & yard
  • Safe zones, crate / bed / den spots
  • Supplies checklist (crate, bed, food / water bowls, toys, grooming tools, collar/leash, ID tag, etc.)
  • How to set up routines (feeding, toileting, sleep)
  • Managing existing pets (if any)
  • Creating your “village” (vet, pet sitter, local training / resources)

Module 4

Expectations and Common Myths

  • Myths / misunderstandings (e.g. “puppies … sleep through the night,” “puppies don’t chew if properly trained,” etc.)
  • Temperament vs training: what can and cannot be fixed easily
  • Differences between puppy and adolescent phases
  • What socialisation means (exposure vs just playing)

Module 5

Big Day & First 24 Hours

  • What to bring home
  • Travel / safety in transit
  • First interactions (house, family, other pets)
  • First meal, first night, toileting
  • Settling in, introducing routines
  • Understanding puppy stress cues

Module 6

Planning The First Week / First Month

  • Sample daily schedule
  • Sleep, toilet, feeding, play, rest (balance)
  • Early training basics (e.g. name, crate, potty)
  • Socialisation & exposure plan
  • Tracking progress & adjusting expectations
  • Common pitfalls & how to avoid them

  • Puppy school and Behavioural Training Enrolment (12 - 16 Weeks)
