Training for puppies 17 to 32 weeks, in your own home, across Sydney.
Your puppy didn't get worse. They just got older.
Sound Familiar?
If any of this is happening at five, six or seven months, you are exactly on schedule. Frustrating, but on schedule.
I'm in Bellevue Hill and I'm struggling with recall and defiance with my 9 month old puppy — He thinks he's the boss — Luke at Toe Beans showed me a series of easy corrections and behavioural skills that my pup responded to almost immediately — He filled in my missing knowledge — Toe Beans has great access to follow-up with easy to follow instruction videos via QR codes so I can go over all the training — Absolutely recommend.

We've been working with Luke through both in-person sessions and teleconsults, and I honestly can't recommend him highly enough. My French Bulldog is in his adolescent phase and, like many Frenchies, very intelligent, opinionated and stubborn. Luke has been incredibly calm, practical and realistic in how he approaches training, no judgement, no fluff, just clear guidance that actually works. He's helped us with resource guarding behaviours, walking challenges and impulse control, and the difference has been noticeable very quickly. The front-clip harness recommendation alone was a game changer, and the structured, consistent approach Luke teaches has made things feel manageable again. What I really value is that Luke explains the why behind behaviours, normalises what's age- and breed-appropriate, and gives tools that are easy to implement in real life.

Luke came in when we were at the end of our tether with our 5 month old Bernese. She was lunging and biting to the extreme. He helped us put some solid structure and rules in place in the house which made us feel confident we could take control of difficult situations. He also worked on leash walking with her, clarifying technique and the right length of being in a tight heel for her age which helped to put her on the right track. Luke is lovely to work with and obviously loves the puppies! Thanks so much Luke for coming to the rescue.

Built For Now
Sydney has plenty of puppy schools and plenty of behaviourists. Almost nothing exists for the six months in between, which is exactly when most owners start looking.
Here's What You Get Access To
Every Level Starts With A Session At Your House
We come to you and work with your actual dog in your actual living room, on the things that are actually happening. Recall that has stopped working, reactivity that has appeared from nowhere, barking at the door, pulling that came back. Every level includes at least one.
No Group Class, And That Is Deliberate
Group school is the wrong room at this age. Your dog is past the socialisation window that made it valuable, and putting an aroused adolescent into a circle of eight week old puppies helps nobody in it. So the class becomes another one to one instead.
The Online Course, Including The Adolescence Material
Yours the moment you sign up and structured around your dog's age rather than a fixed timetable. A standing Problem Library you can open whenever something starts, and the adolescence material that most puppy courses stop short of.
Six months of real support, and Ask Luke 24/7
Six months of phone and community support with an actual human on the other end. Plus Ask Luke, our digital mind, trained only on how we train dogs. Call it, text it or WhatsApp it at 2am when your puppy will not settle. Unlimited, no waiting, same answers you would get from Luke.
17 - 20 Weeks Old
The First Cracks
Recall gets unreliable, the lead gets worse, and things you thought were finished start coming back. Most owners assume they did something wrong. They didn't.
20 - 24 Weeks Old
The Testing Starts
Two hours in your own house. Crate, toileting, biting, sleep, and the ground rules that make everything afterwards work.
24 Weeks Old
The Window Closes
What your dog has met by now, and how they felt while they met it, is what they will treat as normal for life. From here you are editing a view of the world rather than building one.
28 Weeks Old
The Full Personality Arrives
Whatever your dog was always going to be, this is when you meet it. Reactivity, guarding and anxiety that were not there in March turn up fully formed.
32 Weeks
Where Most Owners Lose Control
This is the month people call us. A habit stops being a phase and becomes how your dog is, and the longer it runs the more it costs to undo.
8 Months
Whatever You Built
Handled properly, adolescence is a phase you get through. Handled by hoping, it is the dog you now live with.
I cannot recommend Luke enough and wish I had reached out for training with my dog Kiki sooner. Luke spent a lot of time with us in the initial consultation to understand the issues and we've had 2 sessions for 1 on 1 training. The techniques he taught were very easy to implement in everyday life and I saw noticeable improvements within just 48 hours. My dog Kiki is now much calmer and more relaxed in the home and not barking at every noise from outside. She is less reactive on walks when on lead and am very pleased with the progress we have made since starting the training. It has made my life easier but more importantly, I can see my dog is less stressed.

can't thank Luke enough for his help with my little pom chi, Elton (just 1.8kg but with a big personality!). Elton had become very territorial and would bark at every little sound, especially vacuums, loud noises, or even people moving bins outside. With Luke's tips, I've already seen a big improvement in just a few weeks. Elton has gone from a dog that couldn't settle and barked continuously to one who now calms down quickly. This past weekend we even had five kids coming and going through the house, and everyone noticed how much more relaxed he was, far less barking and much quicker to listen to me and settle.

Thank you Luke! Really appreciate all of your help with my Aussie Bulldog, Mikey. We were having problems with barking, especially with visitors at the door and Luke gave us the tools to help calm Mikey down and make it a less stressful situation for everyone. In 3 days I noticed a massive difference in Mikeys behaviour and it was great to have Luke check in to ensure everything was working.

What Is Ask Luke: Introducing 24/7 Qualified Dog Trainer Support
Ask Luke is my digital mind. Call it, text it or message it on WhatsApp at any hour and you get the same answer I would give you, minus the spelling mistakes.
It has been trained on my training methods and years of real sessions with real dogs, and on nothing else. It is not ChatGPT with a dog hat on. It does not know about your holiday and it will not write your emails. It knows why your puppy bites at six in the evening and what to do about it tonight.
Unlimited use. No message caps. No waiting until Monday. Included on every tier from the day you enrol.

Gold
Gold is for owners who want to keep shaping how their dog turns out. We stay involved across the whole of adolescence rather than fixing one thing and leaving, with a full year of course access and phone support

Platinum is the most hands on we get, right through adolescence and out the other side, with lifetime access, the video library and priority whenever you need us. We take five Platinum clients at a time so we actually can.
Luke was absolutely amazing! He was so loving with my Rottie and made him/myself feel really comfortable. Did some incredible recall training and allowed me to feel in control and safe with my big 55KG baby, can't wait to put everything into practice!

Luke is a really lovely guy with a wealth of knowledge. He gave me incredible insights on relational leadership that has helped transform my day-to-day with my beloved but over-vigilant kelpie Douggie. He's really honest and generous, and obviously has a passion for his calling. You can tell his deep love for dogs, and his methods are wise and kind. Highly recommend.

Teenage Puppy Training in Sydney, 17 to 32 Weeks Old
Your puppy was doing well. Now the recall you spent eight weeks building has quietly vanished, they've started barking at dogs they used to walk past, and something that worked last month doesn't any more. Nothing has gone wrong. Your puppy has hit the teenage months, and they run to a timetable.
What actually happens between 17 and 32 weeks
This is when the gaps in a puppy's foundations start showing, because your dog is finally big enough, confident enough and independent enough to test them. Trainers call it adolescence. Owners usually call it the point where their puppy stopped listening.
| Age | What owners notice |
|---|---|
| Around 20 weeks (5 months) | The first cracks. Recall gets unreliable, the lead gets worse, and things you thought were finished come back. |
| Around 28 weeks (6 to 7 months) | The full personality arrives. Whatever your dog was always going to be, this is when you meet it. |
| Around 32 weeks (7 to 8 months) | Where most owners tell us they lost control, and where a habit stops being a phase and becomes how your dog is. |
"The message I get most weeks is the same," says Luke Buchanan, Owner of The Toe Beans Co and Sydney's Puppy Trainer. "My puppy was fine and now they're not." In almost every case the training was never the problem. The dog just got old enough to have an opinion.
Why what worked at twelve weeks stops working at twenty
A young puppy follows you because they haven't got a better idea. A teenager has better ideas.
Everything you built early held because your puppy's threshold was low and their world was small. Threshold is the point where excitement gets high enough that calm behaviour stops being available to them. As they grow up that point moves and the world gets much bigger, so the same recall now has to compete with a dog across the park, a smell in the grass, and a confidence they didn't have in March. If the foundations underneath were thin, this is when you find out.
Which is why drilling the command harder rarely fixes it. The command isn't the thing that's missing.
What the training actually is
It's the puppy program with the group class swapped for another session in your home.
At this age group school is the wrong room. Your dog is past the socialisation window that made it worth doing, and putting an over-excited teenager into a circle of eight week old puppies helps nobody in it. So the class becomes another one to one, at your place, on the behaviours that are actually happening.
Everything else stays. The online course, the support, and Ask Luke on hand at any hour.
Who this is for
- Puppies from seventeen weeks to thirty two weeks, whether or not they did puppy school
- Owners who did puppy school somewhere else and found it stopped carrying them
- Anyone who has noticed that "he'll grow out of it" is not being borne out by events
If your dog is over thirty two weeks you want one to one dog training instead. If they're sixteen weeks or under, puppy school and the puppy program is the right room, and it's worth getting into it quickly.
How we train
Force free, all of it. No shouting, no punishment, no pain, and nothing that works by hurting your dog.
The teenage months are exactly when owners get talked into the other approach, because the dog is bigger now and the behaviour is more embarrassing in public. A dog that complies out of worry hasn't calmed down, it has gone quiet. You've hidden the behaviour rather than resolved it, and at eight months old there are a lot of years left for it to come back in.
Where we work
Training happens in your home, anywhere in Sydney within roughly a forty-five minute drive of the Harbour Bridge. That covers the Eastern Suburbs, Inner West, North Shore, Northern Beaches, Hills District, Western Sydney and South Sydney.
Not sure whether your dog counts as a teenager or an adult? Book a free fifteen minute meet and greet and we'll tell you which one you're in.
