Puppy school, puppy preschool and puppy kindergarten all mean the same thing. Vets tend to say preschool, we say puppy school, and it is the same four weeks either way.

Your nearest one is in Paddington, about 3.5 km from Bellevue Hill. It is a purpose built dog facility rather than a hired hall, fully enclosed and properly cleaned, which matters when puppies are meeting each other for the first time.

Socialisation that gets left too late

This is the Bellevue Hill one. When there is a big safe garden, there is no urgent reason to leave the house, so the walks start at twelve or fourteen weeks instead of nine. The socialisation window does not wait for the garden.

Puppy school starts as soon as the second vaccination is done, and we set out what the first four weeks outside the house should actually look like.

Toilet training that has not really happened

A puppy with garden access will go outside, so owners assume it is done. What has often not been learned is asking, because nobody ever needed to be asked. That surfaces the first time the dog is somewhere without a back door.

We build the asking deliberately, so the garden is a convenience rather than the whole system.

A puppy left in a big garden to burn energy is a puppy left to invent their own entertainment, and puppies are very good at inventing the wrong one. Most owners are surprised by how much sleep a puppy is actually meant to be getting.

A dog who spent their first six months mostly at home has no practice at reading other dogs. That does not look like fear at first, it looks like rudeness, and other dogs correct it. Two or three of those and you have a genuinely worried adolescent.

A dog with all day garden access and a long fence line does not relax in it, they work in it. More exercise makes them fitter and no calmer, which is why the longer morning walk never fixed it.

The call

A ten month old Groodle in a house off Birriga Road. Big garden, no recall, and by then unwalkable. He had been taken to Cooper Park twice, disappeared into the gully both times, and the family had stopped going.

What we found

He had never really been trained to come back, he had simply always been in a space he could not leave. The garden had done the containing, so nobody had needed to build the recall, and at ten months the garden stopped being enough.

What changed

We built the recall from scratch on a long line, starting in the garden he already knew and moving out to quiet streets and then the top of Cooper Park. Nine weeks before he was off the line in the park, which is longer than most, because we were building something that had never existed rather than repairing something that had slipped.

We call it Relational Leadership. It is less a set of commands than a way of behaving around your dog, so that you become the obvious thing to look at when they do not know what to do. A dog that complies because it is worried about what comes next has not calmed down, it has gone quiet, and that comes back later somewhere less convenient.

What are the main services you offer?

Will more exercise stop the barking?

Check first whether your dog is genuinely bored or short on exercise, because real boredom is a real cause. Exercise on its own is not a cure for behavioural barking though, and adding a second walk to a dog who cannot switch off usually just produces a fitter dog who cannot switch off.

How should I introduce a new dog to my existing dog?

Always do the first meeting on neutral ground, not inside your home. A park or quiet street works well. Keep both dogs on lead, let them sniff briefly, then walk together side by side before going home.

How long does it take for two dogs to get along?

Give them at least 2 to 3 weeks before expecting harmony. Some dogs settle within days; others take months. The first week is often the hardest. Keep things calm and do not rush interactions.

When do Labradors calm down?

Around 2 to 3 years old, most Labs start to settle. Before that, expect a lot of energy. The good news is that a Lab getting enough physical exercise and mental stimulation will be calmer at home. Training, fetch, and swimming all help burn the energy that would otherwise go into chaos.

Are Groodles easy to train?

Yes, they tend to be. Both parent breeds rank among the most trainable dogs around, and Groodles inherit that. They pick up new cues quickly, enjoy the process, and respond well to reward-based training. The main thing to manage is enthusiasm - they can be jumpy and mouthy as puppies, which needs addressing early.

How long does it take to train reliable recall?

For basic indoor recall, most dogs get the idea within a week. For a reliable recall in a park with other dogs and distractions, expect 3 to 6 months of consistent practice. There are no shortcuts with recall. The more repetitions you put in across different environments, the more reliable it becomes.

How much do dog training classes cost in Sydney?

It depends far less on the trainer than on what is actually included. A group only class and a full programme are not the same purchase, so compare what is in the box rather than the headline number.

What should I ask a dog trainer before booking?

Five things. Their policy on prong collars, e-collars and choke chains. The maximum class size and how they match puppies. Their credentials and what they have done recently. Whether they are insured and first aid trained. And what happens between classes at home. A trainer who hesitates on any of them has answered the question.
