About The School

Puppy school, puppy preschool and puppy kindergarten all mean the same thing. Vets tend to say preschool, we say puppy school, and it is the same four weeks either way.

Your nearest one is in Paddington, about 6 km from North Bondi. It is a purpose built dog facility rather than a hired hall, fully enclosed and properly cleaned, which matters when puppies are meeting each other for the first time.

Classes are capped at ten puppies and we match them by size, so your puppy is never learning next to a dog four times their weight.

What it is like owning a dog in North Bondi

What It Is like

North Bondi has more houses and semis than Bondi proper, so more dogs here actually have a bit of outdoor space. It also sits right on top of the one thing everybody assumes they can use and cannot.

Dogs are prohibited on Bondi Beach entirely, on lead or off, including the intertidal rock platforms at Ben Buckler. You can walk the promenade on lead. You cannot step onto the sand at any point, at any hour, and there is no early morning exception.

What North Bondi does have is Barracluff Park, which only became off lead in mid 2024 and is genuinely useful. It runs on a clock and it drops out entirely during organised sport, so a Saturday in winter is not the same as a Tuesday.

Socialisation on the promenade, which is the wrong place to start

Owners are told to socialise their puppy and take them to the busiest stretch of footpath in the eastern suburbs, on a weekend. A puppy who has a frightening first month around dogs does not grow out of it, they grow into it.

A puppy who learns the beach is always the destination

Every walk goes toward the water because that is where everyone walks. A puppy quickly learns to pull that way, and since they can never actually get onto the sand, the pulling never gets resolved, it just gets stronger.

We vary the route deliberately from the start, so the walk is not one long build up to something that never happens.

Biting, with neighbours close by

Every puppy bites. The usual advice, redirect and walk away, runs into a semi or a flat where there is not much away to walk to, and the yelping carries.

We work on the settling side rather than the biting side, because a puppy who can switch off in a small space stops needing to be managed out of it.

Recall failing at Barracluff

Barracluff Park is on the corner of Old South Head Road, which is an arterial. It is unfenced and it is the main off lead option in the suburb, so it is exactly where an adolescent recall failure matters most.

We rebuild it on a long line at the distance it actually breaks, in the park itself rather than in your kitchen.

Lunging on the promenade

Runners, prams, other dogs and nowhere to step aside. An adolescent who is only just coping is put over threshold several times on a single walk, and each time makes the next one harder.

We change your route and your timing first, then close the distance deliberately once they can cope with it.

Barking at everything that passes the window

A ground floor flat or a low fronted semi on a busy North Bondi street gets a dog past every few minutes. A teenager who was fine with that at four months starts holding the whole street as their responsibility at six.

We take the job off them rather than trying to stop the noise, because the barking is the symptom and the job is the cause.

Barking when you leave

Common right across this part of Sydney and it usually arrives with a note from a neighbour or the building manager. Owners have almost always tried a camera, a longer walk and the radio before they ring.

We start inside the home rather than at the front door, because being left is only unbearable when being together was never neutral.

A dog who is no longer safe off lead

Barracluff is a shared sportsfield as well as an off lead park, so the dog mix changes constantly and there is no fence between the grass and Old South Head Road. Owners often stop going rather than fix it, and the dog gets less freedom every year.

We rebuild the recall in that park at that hour, because that is the one that has to work.

A rescue settling in

North Bondi takes a lot of rescue and ex racing dogs. A dog who has never lived in a home arrives with no idea what any of it means, and the first fortnight sets what they think normal looks like.

We come in early rather than after something has gone wrong, and set the house up so the dog is learning the right thing from the first week.

The call

A three year old Kelpie cross adopted eight months earlier, living in a semi off Blair Street. He had stopped coming back at Barracluff Park and had twice ended up on the grass verge at Old South Head Road. The owners had stopped letting him off entirely.

What we found

His recall was fine when nothing was happening and non existent the moment another dog moved fast. He was a working breed with nothing to work on, so a dog running across a field was the most interesting thing in his week. Keeping him on lead had removed the risk and taken away the only outlet he had.

What changed

Long line, and a job. We gave him structured work to do in the park so that chasing was no longer the only thing on offer, and rebuilt the recall specifically around dogs moving. Six weeks before the line came off, and we kept him to the early morning window rather than the busy afternoon one.

Force free, all of it. No shouting, no punishment, no pain, and nothing that works by hurting your dog.

We call it Relational Leadership. It is less a set of commands than a way of behaving around your dog, so that you become the obvious thing to look at when they do not know what to do. A dog that complies because it is worried about what comes next has not calmed down, it has gone quiet, and that comes back later somewhere less convenient.

Luke's Credentials

Luke Buchanan is the owner of The Toe Beans Co and Sydney's Puppy Trainer. He works as a dog trainer and a dog behaviourist, which in practice means the puppy obedience side and the behaviourism side are handled by the same person rather than referred on. He is accredited through the Dog Trainer Academy, Red Cross certified in pet first aid, and AFP background checked. Every session is run by Luke.

What are the main services you offer?

Our dog training runs in three stages and you pick the one that matches your dog's age.

  • 8 to 16 weeks: puppy school, which includes four weeks of group class
  • 17 to 32 weeks: puppy training, for the stage where most owners feel they are losing the dog they had. There is no group class at this age
  • 32 weeks and older: behaviour training, one to one in your own home

Puppy school currently takes bookings at our Paddington venue and at Neutral Bay on the Lower North Shore. Do you train recall for the beach?

Recall training is part of our core programme. We use long-line training to build reliability before trusting off-leash freedom.

What should I do if my dog ignores a recall?

Do not repeat the command. Move toward the dog and put the lead on calmly without any frustration. Never punish a dog for coming to you, even if it took a long time. If the dog eventually returns and is met with anger, coming to you becomes a worse outcome. Make it a positive experience every time.

Why do dogs pull on the lead?

Pulling works. The dog moves forward, so the behaviour gets reinforced. Dogs do not pull to dominate you. They pull because it is the fastest way to get where they want to go, and no one has taught them another option.

Can I use Centennial Park or the Bondi dog park for puppy socialisation?

Sydney's off-lead dog parks are high-arousal, unstructured environments. This is the opposite of what a young puppy needs for early socialisation. Encounters are uncontrolled, the dogs are unknown, and one rough experience can create weeks of reactive behaviour in a sensitive puppy. Puppy school with known dogs and a trainer present is a significantly better format for dog-to-dog socialisation before 16 weeks.

My dog is fine overnight but panics when I leave in the morning.

That is common, and it points at the belief rather than at loneliness. Overnight you are present and your dog can account for you. In the morning you disappear and they cannot. Work the stage one cue drills hardest on your morning routine, since that is usually the most heavily rehearsed set of departure cues in the house.

Are Staffies easy to train?

Staffies are smart and respond well to positive training, but they have a stubborn streak. They'll do what you ask once they understand why it's worth their while. Harsh methods don't work. They tend to either shut down or dig in harder. Food, play, and a trainer they respect gets the best out of them.

What age can my puppy start dog training classes?

We start working with puppies from 8 weeks, beginning at home. Group school starts once the second vaccination is done, usually 11 to 13 weeks. Do not wait for full vaccination before doing any socialisation at all, because the window closes at 6 months and you will run out of time.

When does puppy school run in Sydney?

Puppy school runs on Tuesday evenings, Thursday evenings and Sunday mornings.

Classes run once a week for four weeks, so you keep the same slot for the whole block rather than juggling a different time each week.
