About The School

Puppy school, puppy preschool and puppy kindergarten all mean the same thing. Vets tend to say preschool, we say puppy school, and it is the same four weeks either way.

Your nearest one is in Paddington, about 6 km from Coogee Beach. It is a purpose built dog facility rather than a hired hall, fully enclosed and properly cleaned, which matters when puppies are meeting each other for the first time.

Classes are capped at ten puppies and we match them by size, so your puppy is never learning next to a dog four times their weight.

What It Is like

Coogee is unusually well served for off lead space. Randwick Council runs seventeen off lead areas and five of them are in or next to Coogee, and unlike the councils to the north none of them are on a timer. They are off lead at any time of the day.

The catch is the beach. Randwick does not allow dogs on any of its beaches at all, on lead or off, and the grass in front of Coogee Beach is on lead rather than off. Goldstein Reserve looks like an off lead park and is not.

Most Coogee dogs live in flats, so the parks are doing all the work. That makes recall and dog to dog manners more important here than in a suburb where dogs have their own garden to fall back on.

Toileting with no garden

A puppy in a house learns half of this by accident. In a Coogee flat there is no accident to have. Every toilet break is a stairwell or a lift and a street, and a puppy who cannot hold it that long learns to go indoors instead.

We build the route before the puppy needs it, so it is boring by the time it is urgent.

Coogee has a lot of off lead parks and no timers on them, so owners take a young puppy into a busy one at twelve weeks. That is not socialisation, it is being overwhelmed by adult dogs with no way out.

Every puppy bites. The usual advice, redirect and walk away, is harder in a one bedroom flat where there is nowhere to walk away to and the yelping carries.

We work on the settling side rather than the biting side, because a puppy who can switch off in a small space stops needing to be managed out of it.

Recall going, in parks with no fences

None of the Coogee off lead parks are fenced, and Trenerry Reserve has a shared cycle path and the coastal walkway running straight through it. An adolescent who has decided recall is optional has very little margin there.

Great off lead, hopeless on lead

When a suburb has this much off lead space, the lead work quietly never gets done. Then you need to walk down Coogee Bay Road or take the dog to the vet, and there is no lead training to fall back on.

We fix the lead work on the streets you actually use, because that is the part that has been skipped rather than failed.

Blocks of flats are full of comings and goings, and a teenager decides all of that is worth announcing. Everyone on the floor finds out at once.

We take the job off them rather than trying to stop the noise, because the barking is the symptom and the job is the cause.

The most common call we take in Coogee, and it usually arrives with a note from strata or a neighbour. Owners have almost always tried a camera, a longer walk and the radio before they ring.

We start inside the flat rather than at the front door, because being left is only unbearable when being together was never neutral.

The parks are busy and unfenced, so one bad experience gets repeated with the same dogs. Owners usually respond by stopping going, which takes away the dog's main outlet and makes everything else worse.

We stop the rehearsal first and rebuild tolerance at a distance your dog can actually handle, then work back in.

Coogee takes a lot of rescue dogs. One who has never lived in a home arrives with no idea what a stairwell, a lift or a shared entrance means, and the first fortnight sets what they think normal looks like.

We come in early rather than after something has gone wrong, and set the flat up so the dog is learning the right thing from the first week.

The call

An eighteen month old Staffordshire Bull Terrier cross in a flat off Arden Street. Wonderful with dogs off lead at Baker Park, and lunging at every one of them the moment he was on a lead. The owner had assumed he was becoming aggressive.

What we found

Frustration rather than aggression, and it was entirely predictable. He had spent his whole life meeting dogs by running straight at them in a park. On a lead he could not do that, so he shouted about it. He had also never actually been taught to walk on a lead, because in Coogee you barely have to.

What changed

We taught the lead work from scratch, and separately taught him that dogs on leads are not an invitation. Three weeks before he could pass another dog on Coogee Bay Road without a word, and the off lead park stayed exactly as good as it had always been.

Force free, all of it. No shouting, no punishment, no pain, and nothing that works by hurting your dog.

We call it Relational Leadership. It is less a set of commands than a way of behaving around your dog, so that you become the obvious thing to look at when they do not know what to do. A dog that complies because it is worried about what comes next has not calmed down, it has gone quiet, and that comes back later somewhere less convenient.

Luke Buchanan is the owner of The Toe Beans Co and Sydney's Puppy Trainer. He works as a dog trainer and a dog behaviourist, which in practice means the puppy obedience side and the behaviourism side are handled by the same person rather than referred on. He is accredited through the Dog Trainer Academy, Red Cross certified in pet first aid, and AFP background checked. Every session is run by Luke.

Puppy kindergarten is the same four weeks as puppy school, and for a Coogee puppy the classes are in Paddington. Dog training for teenagers and adults happens in your own flat, where the lead work usually needs doing.

Coogee is unusually well served for off lead space. Randwick Council runs seventeen off lead areas and five of them are in or beside Coogee, and unlike the councils to the north none of them are on a timer. They are off lead at any time of the day.

The catch is the water. Randwick allows dogs on none of its ten beaches, on lead or off, and that includes the rock pools. Coogee Beach, Wylie's Baths, Giles Baths, Ross Jones Memorial Pool and Gordons Bay are all out. There really are very few dog friendly beaches in Sydney, and this stretch of coast has none of them.

The bit that catches locals is the grass. Council states dogs must be on lead in the parks adjacent to the beach, so Goldstein Reserve and the lawns fronting the sand are on lead rather than off. Council itself points dog owners to Trenerry Reserve instead, which is off lead at any time but sits on a clifftop with a shared cycle path and a boardwalk over protected vegetation running through it.

Because most Coogee dogs live in flats, the parks are doing all the work. That is also why so many dogs here are brilliant off lead and hopeless on a lead, since you can get away with never really teaching it.

What are the main services you offer?

Our dog training runs in three stages and you pick the one that matches your dog's age.

Can I leave a dog with separation anxiety alone at all?

During active treatment, the goal is to avoid leaving the dog at a level of anxiety that causes distress. This may mean using a dog sitter, day care, or bringing the dog with you wherever possible. As treatment progresses and the dog's tolerance builds, longer absences become possible.

What is the quickest way to stop lead pulling?

Stop moving every time the lead tightens. When there is slack, move forward. It feels slow at first, but dogs catch on fast. Pair this with rewarding your dog for walking beside you.

Can puppy school in Sydney help with recall training?

It lays the foundation, but reliable off-lead recall usually needs ongoing practice past the four-week course, especially around distance and distraction.

Do Staffies get along with other dogs?

It varies. Some Staffies are dog-friendly throughout their lives; others become selective as they mature. Early and ongoing socialisation is important. If your Staffie shows tension around other dogs, address it early rather than hoping they'll grow out of it.

Why does reactivity seem to come out of nowhere?

It doesn't. Most owners misread their dog's arousal level, thinking a 6 or 7 out of 10 is actually a 3 or 4. The climb was there, it just wasn't read correctly.

Why does my puppy keep having accidents in the same spot?

Dogs are drawn back to spots where they've previously toileted by residual scent. Standard cleaners don't remove the scent signal. Use an enzymatic cleaner designed to break down the proteins in urine. Once the scent is gone, the pull is gone.

Does Medicare or pet insurance cover puppy training in Australia?

Medicare doesn't cover puppy training. Some pet insurance policies have a wellness or enrichment component that may include a contribution toward training, but this varies significantly by policy. Check your specific policy documents or contact your insurer. It's worth raising when you first take out a policy, as some providers include training contributions that policyholders don't know about.

Can I do both group school and private training?

Yes, and it's usually the better outcome. Our puppy school bundles both by design, so you're not choosing between the two.
