How we train
Puppy school in Rose Bay, and the years after it
Puppy school is where a Rose Bay dog should start, because the foreshore asks a lot of a young dog very early. Classes run in Paddington, and dog training for teenagers and adults is done one to one at home.
Rose Bay has something almost nowhere else in Sydney has. There are very few dog friendly beaches in this city, and the foreshore between Dumaresq Reserve and Percival Park is one of the genuine exceptions, off lead at all times including in the water.
That single fact shapes dog ownership here. Rose Bay dogs get a lot of off lead swimming and a lot of unstructured dog to dog contact from a young age, which is wonderful when it goes well. It also means a puppy can learn very early that running straight at another dog usually works out, and that stops being true at about six months when adult dogs start correcting adolescents.
Two things worth getting right. The foreshore is completely unfenced with New South Head Road behind it, so recall is not optional. And the off lead stretch ends. Tingira Memorial Park and its adjacent beach are on lead at all times, and it looks like the same sand.
The Hermitage Foreshore track, Milk Beach and Nielsen Park are Sydney Harbour National Park, where dogs are prohibited entirely. It is the prettiest walk in the area and it catches almost everyone out.
- Puppy preschool, plus honest advice on when the foreshore is too much for a young puppy.
- Adolescent training for recall on an unfenced beach beside an arterial road.
- Dog behaviourism for adults who have started snapping at dogs that run at them.
Puppy school is at Paddington. See adolescent training and in-home behaviour training. We also cover Vaucluse and Double Bay.
