What Bondi Junction is actually like for a dog

What It Is like

Waverley is the second most densely populated council area in New South Wales after the City of Sydney, and Bondi Junction is where that density stacks up, in fifteen and sixteen storey towers sitting on top of a shopping centre and a bus and rail interchange. Around three thousand more homes are planned near the station.

The lift is the first thing that changes for a dog. Elsewhere in the Eastern Suburbs a lift is shared with your neighbours, so a puppy meets the same dozen faces until none of them matter. In a Bondi Junction tower it's shared with shoppers, trades and delivery drivers, and your puppy meets a stranger at arm's length several times a day before reaching grass. That's either the best socialisation in Sydney or a slow build of dread, and which one you get comes down to whether your puppy stays under threshold, not how often it happens.

The second thing is that no green space inside the suburb is worth calling a park. Waverley Park is over the Bondi Road side, Queens Park is down the hill, Centennial is past that, so every outing starts as a road walk through the busiest pedestrian block in the council area. Your dog can't skip it by train either. Sydney Trains carries assistance animals only, and buses take a dog only fully contained in a carrier, so the biggest transport hub outside the CBD is a thing your dog walks past and never through. Puppies, 8 to 16 weeks

Toilet training from a high floor catches people out. If the trip to grass takes four minutes your puppy has forgotten what they came down for, so the schedule gets tighter and the reward has to land within a second. The lift is a training job in itself, not something to endure on the way to one. And the socialisation list is easy to fill here and easy to overfill, because one walk to Westfield exposes a puppy to more novelty than a week anywhere else in the council area. Volume isn't the problem in Bondi Junction. Staying under threshold while they get it is.

Teenagers, 17 to 32 weeks

This is when the park bites. An adolescent who has been fine on lead gets let off in Queens Park or Centennial for the first time, gets rushed by a group, and can't leave. Luke Buchanan, who runs every session himself, dates most Bondi Junction reactivity to one bad minute in a big park, while the owner dates it to a footpath weeks later because that's where they noticed it. So we build recall on a long line in the quiet corners first, and we do more adolescent work than most people expect, because a teenage dog in a small flat with nothing to switch off for is a barking complaint waiting to be written.

Adults, 32 weeks and over

Barking while you're out is the most common call we take from this postcode, and in a tower the complaint rarely comes from one neighbour. It arrives from the building manager with a by-law attached and a date on it. The first thing we establish is whether your dog is genuinely distressed alone or has simply never been asked to switch off while somebody's home, because those two sound identical through a wall and need opposite work. It runs as one to one dog training at your own address, since a response that only fires at your front door won't show up in a hall.

A Groodle, eight months old, ninth floor off Grafton Street. No trouble at all until six months, when the owners started taking him to Centennial on Sunday mornings.

The third or fourth visit he got surrounded. Three dogs, all bigger, all friendly enough, all arriving at once while he stood thirty metres from his owner with nothing between him and them. He froze, then he snapped, then he ran. Nobody was hurt and nobody thought much of it.

Six weeks later he was lunging at dogs on Oxford Street and the owners rang us about lead reactivity. They had never connected the two. Hardly anyone does, because the lead is where you see it and the park is where it happened.

So we took the park out for a while. Long line work at the quiet end of Waverley Park at seven in the morning, when there are four dogs about instead of forty. Distance work on the footpath, closing the gap by a metre a week rather than a metre a session. And he stopped greeting every dog he saw, because a rushed greeting while he was over threshold only rehearsed the thing we were undoing.

He was back in Centennial by the spring, off lead, with a recall that held. The park was never the problem. The park with no exit was.
