I'm in Bellevue Hill and I'm struggling with recall and defiance with my 9 month old puppy — He thinks he's the boss — Luke at Toe Beans showed me a series of easy corrections and behavioural skills that my pup responded to almost immediately — He filled in my missing knowledge — Toe Beans has great access to follow-up with easy to follow instruction videos via QR codes so I can go over all the training — Absolutely recommend.

I cannot recommend Luke enough and wish I had reached out for training with my dog Kiki sooner. Luke spent a lot of time with us in the initial consultation to understand the issues and we've had 2 sessions for 1 on 1 training. The techniques he taught were very easy to implement in everyday life and I saw noticeable improvements within just 48 hours. My dog Kiki is now much calmer and more relaxed in the home and not barking at every noise from outside. She is less reactive on walks when on lead and am very pleased with the progress we have made since starting the training. It has made my life easier but more importantly, I can see my dog is less stressed.

We've been working with Luke through both in-person sessions and teleconsults, and I honestly can't recommend him highly enough. My French Bulldog is in his adolescent phase and, like many Frenchies, very intelligent, opinionated and stubborn. Luke has been incredibly calm, practical and realistic in how he approaches training, no judgement, no fluff, just clear guidance that actually works. He's helped us with resource guarding behaviours, walking challenges and impulse control, and the difference has been noticeable very quickly. The front-clip harness recommendation alone was a game changer, and the structured, consistent approach Luke teaches has made things feel manageable again. What I really value is that Luke explains the why behind behaviours, normalises what's age- and breed-appropriate, and gives tools that are easy to implement in real life.

can't thank Luke enough for his help with my little pom chi, Elton (just 1.8kg but with a big personality!). Elton had become very territorial and would bark at every little sound, especially vacuums, loud noises, or even people moving bins outside. With Luke's tips, I've already seen a big improvement in just a few weeks. Elton has gone from a dog that couldn't settle and barked continuously to one who now calms down quickly. This past weekend we even had five kids coming and going through the house, and everyone noticed how much more relaxed he was, far less barking and much quicker to listen to me and settle.

Luke came in when we were at the end of our tether with our 5 month old Bernese. She was lunging and biting to the extreme. He helped us put some solid structure and rules in place in the house which made us feel confident we could take control of difficult situations. He also worked on leash walking with her, clarifying technique and the right length of being in a tight heel for her age which helped to put her on the right track. Luke is lovely to work with and obviously loves the puppies! Thanks so much Luke for coming to the rescue.

Thank you Luke! Really appreciate all of your help with my Aussie Bulldog, Mikey. We were having problems with barking, especially with visitors at the door and Luke gave us the tools to help calm Mikey down and make it a less stressful situation for everyone. In 3 days I noticed a massive difference in Mikeys behaviour and it was great to have Luke check in to ensure everything was working.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are the 10 most commonly asked question

Puppy Training (17 - 32 Weeks Old)

What is included in the adolescent training?

Our adolescent training is Puppy Training 17 to 32 weeks, for dogs of roughly four to seven and a half months. It combines one to one training at home, the online course and direct support, and what you get depends on the level you choose. Here is a summary of what is included:

  1. One to one training sessions at home, sixty to ninety minutes each
  2. One session on Bronze, two on Silver, four on Gold and eleven on Platinum
  3. Access to our complete online puppy program from Silver up
  4. Lifetime community access from Silver up, one month on Bronze
  5. Personalised one to one support across community and phone from Silver up, community only on Bronze
  6. Equipment if necessary
  7. Lifetime access to the 5 Golden Rules

How is your method different to other trainers?

You've tried everything with your dog. The endless treats, brain games and a range of random YouTube videos with trainers saying they have some magic bullet but nothing sticks. You're not doing it wrong, you are just trying to fix the wrong thing. Your dog isn't broken.

Whether you've got a barking dog or a dog who pulls on the leash or a dog who jumps up or is becoming a little bit aggressive, the chances are they are getting far too excited, reactive and far too emotional at that point in time. The real trick I found is to get those dogs to turn to you, to listen to you when it really matters. Because if you get that bit in place and they're not all scattered-brain and over excited and over emotional you're halfway there. If they're calm and they turn and look to you, then you have the opportunity to show them how you want them to behave.

So in a nutshell, before you start to train the dog you need to know how to win their mind. The problem is that most trainers jump straight into commands and training your dog when they are overstimulated. The problem isn't that your dog doesn't know what to do, it's that they are choosing not to listen.

Think of it like having a terrible fear of flying and being dragged towards a plane. Someone telling you how safe planes are isn't going to make you calm down.

At The Toe Beans Co, we don't start by training your dog. We start by understanding the why, through the dog's eyes. Once your dog actually chooses to come alongside you, everything else becomes easy.

We come to your home in Sydney. Sessions run sixty to ninety minutes, in your space, with your specific issues. On the 32 weeks and over program the first session runs two hours. No generic advice. We look at the cause, we show you exactly how to change it, and you leave with a plan you can start that same day.

This is completely force-free. No shouting, no pain, no fear, no force. We work with your dog's natural instincts, not against them.

Which areas of Sydney do you work in?

One to one training happens in your home, anywhere in Sydney within roughly a forty five minute drive of the Harbour Bridge. That covers the:

  • Inner City and City Centre
  • Eastern Suburbs
  • Inner West
  • Lower North Shore
  • Upper North Shore
  • Northern Beaches
  • Hills District
  • Western Sydney
  • South Sydney and St George

Group puppy school runs at six fixed venues within about eight kilometres of the Harbour Bridge: Paddington, Edgecliff, Neutral Bay, Zetland, Alexandria and Marrickville. All six are taking bookings. See the puppy school dates page for current dates.

What are the most common issues you help owners with?

We have covered a range of issues including:

  • Leash and walking issues - pulling, reactivity, and aggression during walks
  • Jumping up on people - inappropriate greeting behaviour and attention-seeking
  • Excessive barking - at doors, for attention, when left alone, in cars, and around property
  • Aggression problems - toward people, other animals, or objects
  • Separation anxiety - destructive behaviour and distress when left alone
  • Biting, nipping, and destructive chewing - especially common in puppies
  • Recall issues - not coming when called or running away
  • Potty training problems - house-breaking difficulties
  • Fearfulness and anxiety - phobias, scared behaviour, and hyperactivity
  • Puppy behavioural issues - general new puppy adjustment problems
  • Inappropriate elimination - including eating faeces
  • Furniture and boundary issues - jumping on furniture, accessing restricted areas
  • Multi-dog household problems - dogs not getting along with each other
  • Muzzle training - teaching dogs to accept and wear muzzles properly

Can you guarantee results?

No honest trainer can guarantee a specific outcome. Most of the work happens in your home between sessions, and your dog is not a machine. Anyone promising you a fixed result is selling you something.

What we do commit to is this. You get a plan built around your dog rather than a script, and a written follow up after every session so you are never left guessing what to do next. You get direct access to us for the length of your support period, and Ask Luke any hour of the day. You keep community access for life.

If you are doing the work and you are not getting anywhere, tell us. We will look at what is actually happening in the house and change the plan. That is included, and it is the part most owners find they needed.

What does your adolescent puppy program teach?

The adolescent program is a combination between our Adult Dog Training method and our online puppy program. For every owner, we teach the foundational behaviour rules that will help your dog to live a calm and happy life. Once we have covered that we move on to breed specific, behaviour specific and other focus areas that you need. At this age dogs commonly exhibit selective hearing, are struggling with recall during playtime and a host of other things.

Most people have been brainwashed into thinking that if your dog can do sit or paw, they are well behaved. But a well behaved dog is much more than that. Can you leave them at home without barking? Or meet dogs in the park without reacting? Do they Resource guard? Or can they be walked calmly on the leash?

Although a lot of owners think their dog will do this naturally, I can tell you for a fact that they cannot. There are more owners than ever before with dogs suffering from separation anxiety, that cannot be walked calmly or are reactive to everyone.

Our adolescent program teaches you everything you need to know about: dog psychology, dog behaviourism and dog training. We help you to set great foundations for your puppy and also how to identify common behavioural issues as they arise and know exactly what to do.

Imagine having someone in your corner all the time to help you understand your dog's behaviour and what you need to be doing at the exact right time

What qualifications do you have?

All our team members are required to pass AFP background checks before working with us as well as sitting and passing the Red Cross Pet First Aid Australia course. I trained in Relational Leadership whilst also being a Certified Professional Pet Sitter (CPPS) from Pet Sitters International.

Are you insured?

Yes, we are fully insured.

Can you help with apartment barking?

Yes. Excessive barking in apartments usually comes down to separation anxiety, boredom or attention seeking. We work on the root cause through structured independence training rather than just quieting the symptom.

My Puppy is Already 12/14/16 etc weeks old. Can I Still Join?

Yes. You can join at any point. There may be one or two elements you have already passed, but plenty of owners join later and get just as much out of it.

The course is divided into age brackets so you are only ever reading the part that matches the puppy in front of you. If your puppy is already past 16 weeks, our seventeen to thirty two week Puppy Training program is usually the better fit and we will tell you that rather than sell you the wrong thing.

The only hard limit is group puppy school. Your puppy needs their second vaccination to join, which usually happens somewhere in the twelve to fourteen week range and most commonly at twelve weeks. That is for safety.
