Search "dog training classes near me" in Sydney and you'll get about forty options inside a ten kilometre radius, all describing themselves in roughly the same words. Positive. Force-free. Award winning. None of that tells you the one thing that matters, which is what happens in the room when a puppy panics.
I'm Luke Buchanan, Owner of The Toe Beans Co and Sydney's Puppy Trainer. I run puppy school at five venues and 1:1 sessions in people's homes, so I've got an obvious interest here. Read this as a checklist you can hold every trainer to, us included. If we fail your version of it, book somewhere else.
The three types of dog training classes near me, and which one you need
Almost everything a search returns is one of three formats. They're not competing with each other. They solve different problems, and booking the wrong one is the most common way people waste money.
Group puppy school
Group does one thing nothing else can. Other puppies, in a controlled room, with someone watching the interactions and stepping in before a bad one lands.
It also exposes the gap between a behaviour and a reliable one. Your puppy sits in your kitchen. Fine. Put it in a hall with six other puppies and ask again, and you find out whether the sit exists or whether the quiet kitchen was doing the work. Group is where that gets closed.
What group can't do is see your house. An instructor gets your puppy for an hour a week. They don't see your hallway, your feeding routine, or who in your family caves at 6am. Class is a layer on top of the training, and the training happens at home.
Group is also the wrong first step for a puppy that's already frightened of other dogs. Close range exposure to the thing that scares it, with no way out, makes it worse. That dog needs individual work first.
1:1 in-home training
Everything group can't do. The plan gets built around the actual house, the actual door the dog bolts out of, the actual thing on the other side of the fence.
This is the format for reactivity, separation anxiety, resource guarding, and for adult dogs generally. An adult dog already has established patterns inside a specific household, and those patterns are the thing being changed. A room full of unfamiliar dogs was never going to diagnose that.
Our 1:1 in-home sessions run anywhere in Sydney within about a 45 minute drive of the Harbour Bridge. That's a driving radius rather than a suburb list, so it covers far more of the city than most people assume.
Board-and-train, and why we don't recommend it
Board-and-train sounds best on paper. Hand the dog over for two or three weeks, get a trained dog back. If it worked I'd offer it.
Four reasons it doesn't, and they're worth spelling out because nobody selling it will.
The behaviour is learned with a different handler in a different building. Dogs are context specific to a degree that surprises people, and what your dog learns about a stranger's house and a stranger's rules doesn't transfer cleanly to yours.
The owner learns nothing. You get a dog back with no ability to hold it there, so it fades, usually inside a month or two. Consistency across every person in the house is what makes training stick, and board-and-train removes you from the exact weeks where the learning happened.
You can't see what was done. A format built on you being absent is a format where you cannot verify what produced the result. Fast results and no witnesses is a combination worth thinking about.
And the relationship is the thing being trained. Training is a set of habits between your dog and the people it lives with, which means you're half of it. That can't be outsourced for a fortnight.
The questions to ask before booking
Ask these on the phone before you pay anything. How a trainer answers tells you more than the website ever will.
What's your policy on prong collars, e-collars and choke chains? The answer you want is immediate and total, plus a clear account of what they use instead. The answer that should end the call is any version of "only for the tough cases" or "as a last resort". There's no defensible middle ground. A trainer who reaches for a compulsion tool occasionally has just described their entire toolkit.
How many puppies in a class, and how do you match them? A good trainer states a cap without being pushed, and matches on size, weight and temperament rather than age. A 12 week German Shepherd can already outweigh a six month old dachshund. If the answer is "we just add another helper", the cap is however many they can sell.
Are you insured and first aid trained? Public liability cover, and current pet first aid. Ours is through Red Cross Australia, and we're AFP background checked, which hardly anyone asks about and everyone should. A trainer who treats this question as an insult has told you something useful.
What happens between classes? This is the question that separates a class from a program. You want specific homework tied to what was covered, written down, building toward next week. "Just keep practising" means the class is the whole product, and the class is one hour out of a hundred and sixty eight.
Red flags that mean walk away
Most of these look obvious written down. The reason they still catch people is that nobody's looking for them at the point of booking.
- Any correction based handling. Lead pops, physically pinning a puppy, anything designed to create discomfort to stop a behaviour in progress.
- "Show them who's boss" framing. Calm, consistent leadership is most of what we teach and it's a good thing. The red flag is confrontation dressed up as leadership.
- Aversive tools of any kind. Not situational, not just for the difficult ones.
- A guarantee. Nobody can guarantee a behavioural outcome on a living animal, and anyone offering one is selling something other than training.
- No public liability insurance.
- Flooding a frightened dog, meaning holding it near whatever scares it until it "gets over it". What you usually get is a dog that stops showing the fear rather than a dog that stopped feeling it.
- Grouping by age alone, with no attention to size or confidence.
- Any hesitation when you ask about methods. A straight question deserves a straight answer, and the pause is the answer.
Worth saying plainly. The dog training industry sits roughly twenty years behind human behavioural science, and a lot of what still gets sold as "balanced" or "traditional" is the compulsion based approach that field moved past decades ago.
What ethical actually looks like on the day
Go and watch a class before you book. Most schools will let you. Here's what you're looking for.
It should be quieter than you expect. No raised voices, and no verbal correction of a dog mid-behaviour, no "ah-ah", no sharp "no". A loud room is a room where nobody's reading the dogs.
Watch what happens before anything is asked of a puppy. A good trainer brings arousal down first, then asks. An over threshold dog physically cannot take in new information, and pushing through it is the clearest sign someone is running a script rather than reading the room.
With an over aroused puppy the intervention should be calm and physical rather than verbal. A quiet hold until it settles, silence throughout, released the second it's calm, and no fuss either way. A genuinely wild puppy gets a short break somewhere boring to reset, not more stimulation and not a telling off.
With a frightened or shut down puppy you should see the opposite. Space. No cornering, no being carried toward the thing, no scooping and soothing, because comforting a dog mid-fear confirms there was something worth being scared of. The trainer goes neutral, often turns away entirely, and lets the puppy choose when to come in.
And arrivals and departures should be dull. Big excited hellos at the door teach a puppy that thresholds are high drama, which is a habit you'll be undoing at home for months. If you want the longer version of this, we wrote a full checklist for choosing a Sydney puppy school.

Group puppy school runs at five venues. Paddington at 308 Oxford Street is the flagship, then Zetland, Marrickville, Alexandria and Neutral Bay. Anyone in Sydney can attend any of them, so choose on convenience rather than postcode.
The group classes are the middle piece of the Complete Puppy Program rather than a standalone product. It opens with a session in your home, then four weeks of group school, with the online course and support running alongside both. Puppies start with us from 8 weeks, and join group school once the second vaccination is done, which for most puppies lands between 11 and 13 weeks.
For adult dogs, or anything reactive at any age, we do 1:1 in-home work instead.
