18. How To Introduce Your New Puppy To Family, Kids, And Other Pets

Your puppy's first impressions matter. Get introductions wrong, and you're creating problems that last for years.

It's important not to overwhelm them, but it's also important they learn about different situations and people.

Here's how to introduce them to family members and existing pets safely.

Introducing Your Puppy To Kids

Kids should:

Sit down and let the puppy come to them. No squealing or grabbing. Gentle pets only. Learn 'puppy needs space' signs.

You should:

Supervise all interactions. No face-to-face contact (puppy may nip). Kids under 5 need extra caution.

The biggest mistake people make is letting excited children overwhelm a scared puppy.

Teach your kids to be calm and gentle before the puppy arrives. Practice sitting quietly. Practice speaking in calm voices.

Introducing Your Puppy To Adults

Adults should use calm, quiet voices. Let the puppy approach them. Don't crowd the puppy. Respect if the puppy is overwhelmed.

First day: immediate family only. Wait 2-3 days before extended family visits.

Your well-meaning relatives will want to meet the puppy immediately. They need to wait.

Your puppy needs time to adjust to their new home before being passed around to 15 different people.

Introducing Your Puppy To Older Dogs

This is where most people panic unnecessarily.

First meeting:

Ideally in neutral territory (front garden, not inside). Both dogs on leads. Let them sniff briefly. Keep it short (less than 5 minutes). Puppies can yelp. Don't worry too much.

What's normal:

A warning growl is appropriate. Don't punish it. A quick air snap is teaching. Allow it. Your older dog is setting boundaries. That's good.

What's not normal:

Prolonged aggression is not acceptable. Separate them if this happens.

Red flags:

Stiff body language. Intense staring. Growling and snarling. Lunging. Your dog won't disengage.

Confused about whether your older dog's reaction is normal or concerning? Our community has video examples of appropriate corrections versus genuine aggression. You can also post videos in our forums for experienced owners to assess.

Introducing Your Puppy To Cats

This takes patience and time.

Baby gate between them for the first week. Let the cat have escape routes. Never force interaction. Reward calm behaviour.

It may take weeks or months. Some cats never warm up. That's okay.

Cats need to feel safe. They need to approach on their own terms. Forcing interaction creates a cat who hates your dog forever.

The Timeline For Introductions

Day 1: Immediate family only. No visitors. No overwhelming your puppy.

Days 2-3: Extended family can visit briefly. Keep it calm. No passing the puppy around.

Week 1: Start introducing to other household pets gradually. Use gates and controlled meetings.

Week 2+: Expand social circle slowly. Always prioritise your puppy's comfort over people's excitement.

What Not To Do

Don't invite everyone over on day one. Don't let kids squeal and grab. Don't force your older dog to interact. Don't let your cat feel cornered. Don't push your puppy into uncomfortable situations.

Your puppy will be with you for over a decade. There's no rush to introduce them to everyone in the first week.
