Mistake #1: Choosing With Their Heart, Not Their Head

That puppy in the window is adorable. But is it right for your life?

The cute puppy might be a high-energy breed that needs 3 hours of exercise daily. The rescue might have anxiety issues you're not equipped to handle.

Choose based on fit, not just feelings.

Think about your actual lifestyle. How much time do you have? What's your energy level? What's your experience with dogs?

A Cocker Spaniel and a Border Collie might both be cute, but they need very different things from their owners.

Mistake #2: Underestimating The First 3 Months

People think "I'll hire a trainer if needed."

But you can't outsource the first 12 weeks. You are the trainer. You are doing the 2am toilet breaks. You are cleaning up accidents.

If you can't commit to this intensity, wait.

The first 3 months determine everything. This is when socialisation happens. When toilet training happens. When your puppy learns what behaviour is acceptable.

Miss this window, and you'll spend years trying to fix problems that could have been prevented.

Mistake #3: Not Having A Financial Safety Net

Most people budget for food and vet checks.

Here's what you need to understand: if you don't successfully socialise your dog before 16 weeks, you will have a dog with terrible behavioural issues.

Just because you got a Cavapoo or a cute doodle doesn't mean they won't develop problems. In fact, these dogs tend to be some of the worst behaved adults we work with.

You need proper puppy school for socialisation. You need to learn how to identify problem behaviours before they become problems.

This isn't optional. It's critical.

This isn't necessarily a mistake, but it's a trade-off you should understand.

You can get a trainer to help you prepare your puppy, or you can get a trainer to help you repair your dog later.

Common Questions

What are the most common mistakes new puppy owners make?

The big ones are not starting training soon enough (you can absolutely train an 8-week-old), being too inconsistent with rules (saying no one day and letting it go the next), skipping socialisation in the first 16 weeks, using punishment instead of redirection, and expecting the puppy to understand what you want without teaching it. Most of these come down to not knowing what to expect and how to respond.

Is it too late to train my puppy if they're already developing bad habits?

No. Dogs can learn at any age, and habits that have been around for a few weeks aren't deeply ingrained. The earlier you address something, the faster it shifts - but three months is not three years. If a behaviour has become a strong habit, it takes more time and more repetition to replace it, but it's absolutely doable with the right approach.

Should I let my puppy sleep in my bed?

That's genuinely your call. There's nothing wrong with it if you want that arrangement and the dog is settled and not anxious when they can't access the bed. The issue comes when the puppy develops a strong dependence on sleeping with you and can't cope in other situations. If you start with them in their own space, it's easier to give that access later than to take it away.

How do I stop my puppy from biting?

Biting is normal puppy behaviour - they explore with their mouths and have no idea it hurts. The goal is to teach bite inhibition and redirect to appropriate outlets. When a bite is too hard, stop play immediately and withdraw attention for 30 to 60 seconds. Give them something acceptable to chew. Regular repetition over weeks is what shifts the behaviour, not a single correction.

Why does my puppy ignore me when I call them?

Because you haven't made coming to you more rewarding than whatever else they're doing. Recall is one of the most useful cues to teach, and one of the most commonly mishandled. If your puppy runs away and you get frustrated or tell them off when they eventually come back, you're teaching them that coming to you leads to bad things. Every time they come when called, something good needs to happen - every single time.
